Description
To those outside the profession, Callinan QC was probably best known for his work as a leading commercial silk. His quiet, polite but firm manner graced the country's top courts in a remarkable diversity of cases. But to view his Honour's work at the Bar as simply the work of another great commercial silk is to do his Honour a grave injustice. Callinan's role as prosecutor in the historic Murphy trial is documented elsewhere in this journal. Equally as important was Callinan's work representing the Commonwealth in extradition proceedings against Christopher Skase in Australian and Spanish Courts. Lesser known outside his native state was his advocacy before a Senate Select Committee on unresolved Whistle Blower cases. Callinan's submissions to that Committee, being as frank and fearless as they were, surely represent the finest traditions of the independent Bar.
